High-Rise Signage Project: Hartford Steam Boiler

Jul 25, 2023

Towards the end of last year, the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB) engaged Lauretano Sign Group with a challenging high-rise project. HSB, which is part of the Munich Re Company, but is headquartered in our hometown of Hartford, CT, announced its new logo and rebranding program in March 2020. Postponed due to the Covid pandemic, Lauretano was asked to design, engineer, permit, manufacture, and install their new large-scale logo spanning across the 23rd and 24th level of the One State Street building located on the bank of the Connecticut River.

At Lauretano Sign Group, challenging projects are our specialty, and the HSB sign ranks among the most complicated projects to date – right on par with the Virtus project we completed a couple of years prior. Coincidentally, both of these signs/projects are in a clear line of site as if they were competing for the crown of Hartford’s skyline.

Project specs:

  • Location: One State Street
  • Height: 315’
  • Frame weight: 11,000 lbs
  • Sign weight: 5,000 lbs
  • Letter height: 11’
  • Logo height: 30’
  • Project complications: Granite building fascia and windows requiring custom outriggers

The numbers speak for themselves, with over 16,000 lbs having to be hoisted 315’ into the air, all done during Connecticut’s winter months. Equipped with RGB lighting allowing the logo and the letters to change color, the Hartford Steam Boiler high-rise sign project is one for the books.
